Why voluntary work can be important for your secretary CV

If you have a CV with many years of work experience, volunteering will still have a small positive impact on your chances of getting an interview.

However, for those who drop out of school or have little experience, volunteer work can be an important part of their core work experience. Job seekers who struggle to fill in the experience section may find that volunteer work is the only thing to rely on to demonstrate the essential skills.

Show you don’t mind ‘grafting’

Whether you are doing secretarial / administrative duties or doing something completely different, when you leave your time to work for free to help an organization, charity or a local country park, you instantly show the employer that you are not afraid to work hard. When a hiring manager reads a CV, they may have a hard time getting an impression of your work resilience, and this is where volunteer work experience comes into its own.

Show you’re not afraid of ‘overtime’

Following the above point of hard work, it shows the employer that you are not afraid to work overtime, including overtime. Depending on the role, most companies offer overtime and / or expect it from some employers.

Obviously this will be explained to you during the interview – but you are already one step ahead by showing the employer that you are giving your time for free on your CV. Overtime is not always paid, and whether it is paid or not, you are clearly someone who is happy to work extra hours when the company needs it.

Show initiative

For a person who leaves school, volunteer work shows great initiative to an employer. It would have been much easier to sit at home looking for work, but instead you decided to get off your butt and get stuck during this search period.

While studying on weekdays, you may also be volunteering on weekends, this shows a really hardworking individual.

Give yourself much-needed work experience

It is possible to have a part-time job while studying at college or university, so this will be a great work experience for your CV and of course for you! Part-time work and volunteer work are great ways to gain experience for your resume and will impress any employer who is fully aware that you have just left the training.

Everyone has to start somewhere, and assuming your first crack in a job interview is for a lower position or apprenticeship, you’ll end up with many school leavers who don’t have the work experience you already have.

Help to keep your CV looking busy

As a school leaver, you will have a little difficulty completing a two-page resume as you have no work experience. Volunteering is a great way to fill your resume and is something you can definitely focus on.

Don’t be afraid to make this the focal point of your resume, explaining what you have done and what you have accomplished during your time. A list of roles and responsibilities shows an employer what you can do without any training on certain basics such as communication, managing transactions, resolving customer complaints and much more.

Boost your own personal development

In addition to looking great on your resume, volunteering is a great way to start your development in the business world in general. The interaction is very different from what you are used to and there are many new challenges to be overcome every day.

Complying with deadlines, punctual, courteous, courteous, helping customers, learning new skills, etc. Having to are great new skills to keep excelling and improving. You’re definitely better at volunteering than sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring. You’re missing out on a lot of work and life skills if you’re not busy!

Grab a great reference

Volunteering is a great way to get references that would otherwise be unattainable. Therefore, it is very important to take volunteer work very seriously and not just fill up your time when looking for paid work.

To get a good reference, you need to work hard in everything you do, and this also applies to volunteering. Give whatever you have and you’ll find that this great reference gets you the job!

You can find volunteer opportunities on sites like Do It – this allows you to search specifically for secretarial and administrative jobs if you want.
