Jacques Chirac was born on November 29, 1932 in Paris. Son of a manager, he studied at the prestigious National School of Administration in Strasbourg and embarked on a political career in the 1960s, inspired by the charismatic figure of De Gaulle .

In a short time he became assistant to President Georges Pompidou (successor to De Gaulle ), and in 1974 he was appointed prime minister of the Giscard government . In 1956 Chirac married Bernadette Chodron de Courcel, known to the Institute of Political Studies in Paris, from which he had two daughters, Laurence and Claude, the latter responsible for years for his father’s Public Relations.

In 1976 he founded the Group for the Republic (Rassemblement pour la République, RPR), a right-wing grouping born from the ashes of the Gaullist party, the Union of Democrats for the Republic (UDR). From 1977 to 1995 Chirac is mayor of Paris, except for a two-year interruption, from 1986 to 1988, in which he was appointed prime minister by Mitterrand , after his party’s victory at the renewal of the Nation Assembly. After Mitterrand’s departure from the presidential elections of 1995, Jacques Chirac was elected head of France.

Chirac’s early years are marked by a series of important reforms, both in the economic and social spheres. One of the first measures taken is in fact the limitation of the presidential mandate, which goes from seven to five years. Meanwhile, under the pressure of the prime minister, the socialist Lionel Jospin , Chirac reduces the weekly working hours of the workers, from 38 to 37 hours. In 1999, moreover, France is among the first nations in Europe to introduce a contractual form that regulates de facto unions, even when it comes to people of the same sex, the so-called PACS (Civil Solidarity Pacts).

At the 2002 presidential elections, he returns with a new party: the Union for a Popular Movement (Union pour un Mouvement Populaire UMP), which brings together the different souls of the center-right, united by the Gaullist tradition. But an unexpected political upheaval overwhelms the country: in the first round the candidate Jean-Marie Le Pen , exponent of the far-right party, Front National, gets an avalanche of votes, while the former prime minister, Jospin , is eliminated, scrapping a put 15%. The challenge in the second round is between the outgoing president and the ultra-nationalist candidate. To prevent Le Pen’s possible victory, the French left is launching a massive campaign in favor of Chirac, who gets the second job with 82% of the votes.Who is Jacques Chirac? Where is Jacques Chirac? Once at the Elysée for the second time, the president’s popularity is thrown into crisis by a series of missteps and road accidents starting with the Banlieue uprising, towards the end of 2005, when the social and ethnic tensions of the suburbs degraded of Paris lead to a real urban warfare between immigrants and law enforcement. Furthermore, on September 2, 2005, Chirac suffered a slight stroke that forced him to stay in hospital for a week.

During the first months of 2006 its popularity collapsed again, when the government of the very loyal Dominique de Villepin proposed a new contractual formula, the CPE (Contrat première embauche, First Employment Contract), introducing a form of precariousness for young people in France entering the labor market. An authentic street riot ensues, with more than three million protesters, and on 10 April of the same year Chirac is forced to withdraw the CPE.

On the international front, he harshly criticizes the military intervention in Iraq wanted by the Bush administration . A position underlined by a famous phrase pronounced in 2005 when speaking of the British he says: ” We cannot trust people whose cousins are so bad “, obviously the indirect reference is to the Americans. On March 11, 2007, Chirac announced, in a message to the nation broadcast on live television, that he intended not to run for the third time in the 2007 elections, and a few days later he said he supported the candidacy of Nicolas Sarkozy .

Starting from the end of the 1990s, the president’s head is burdened with various accusations of corruption, referring to the years in which Chirac was mayor of Paris: according to the investigators, he allegedly used public money to finance his party, the RDP, as well as to maintain his and his family’s high standard of living. In 2003, driven by the neosindaco of Paris, the Socialist Bertrand Delanoë, Judge Philippe Courroye opened a civil trial against his wife Bernadette, accused of having spent with her husband 14 million francs (about 700 euros) per day for extra services during his stay at the capital city hall. Chirac, on the other hand, thanks to an extraordinary Constitutional Council, manages to benefit from immunity, which lapsed in 2007, when he renounced to reapply.

He died in Paris at the age of 86 on 26 September 2019. In the last years of his life he had been hospitalized several times as a result of a stroke.Who is Jacques Chirac? Where is Jacques Chirac?
